Upon arriving in the Central American country, she was received by Hector Zelaya, the son and private secretary of Honduran President Xiomara Castro. Accompanying the Mexican president were Foreign Affairs Secretary Juan Ramon de la Fuente and Deputy Secretary for Latin America and the Caribbean, Raquel Serur Smeke.
Sheinbaum, who will remain in Tegucigalpa for only two hours, explained that her participation in the CELAC Summit will focus on promoting greater dialogue to facilitate regional integration.
“Latin America and the Caribbean have enormous potential. It’s time to strengthen our economic ties and help one another,” the president stated in previous days.
Sheinbaum will use the summit as an opportunity to present the “Mexico Plan,” a strategy aimed at diversifying markets and strengthening the regional economy. This plan includes concrete actions to boost food and energy sovereignty, reduce reliance on imports, and create specialized jobs.
The text reads, “President Iris Xiomara Castro receives President Claudia Sheinbaum at the 9th CELAC Summit. Castro received representatives of the 33 delegations that arrived in Tegucigalpa.”
The Mexican president will also emphasize the importance of regional unity in the face of global challenges, such as the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
“CELAC is a space of convergence that transcends ideologies. It is Bolivar’s call—the idea of regional unity that strengthens us as a region,” the president affirmed.
With proposals such as the Mexico Plan and her focus on regional unity, Sheinbaum seeks to consolidate Mexico’s role as a key player in Latin American development. The CELAC Summit promises to be a turning point for the region, marking an important step toward a more sustainable and equitable future.
The 9th CELAC Summit, held for the first time in Honduras, brings together leaders from 33 countries in the region, including Presidents Lula da Silva (Brazil), Luis Arce (Bolivia), Miguel Diaz-Canel (Cuba), and Gustavo Petro (Colombia).
During the event, member states will discuss key issues such as the migration crisis, U.S.-imposed tariffs, and economic cooperation. Honduran president will hand over the pro tempore CELAC presidency to Petro, thus marking the beginning of a new chapter in regional integration.
